The Digital Twin is a simulation model that represents the actual physical product to a reasonable extent, considering its purpose, over the life of the product. In the context of the digital twin, the simulation model also includes the actual load and actual support (by taking field measurement data). The test data is used to validate and update the simulation model so that the structural response can be estimated with a high level of confidence even at locations where sensors and instruments are not installed.

Validation and updating of the Finite element model is the best and systematic approach. The workflows include: data management, test planning, correlation analysis, sensitivity analysis, model updating and post-processing. This can be done immediately after the product prototype but can also be done during the life of the product to ensure the simulation model remains accurate. Therefore this technology will be an important factor in digital twin.

There are many case studies related to digital twins in various machining and structural applications.
